JAPN 1010 & 1020 – Elementary Japanese I & II
These courses introduce the basics of Japanese, following Genki I. Students learn essential N5 grammar, vocabulary, and kanji while practicing speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Topics include everyday conversations, hiragana, katakana, and around 145 kanji, building a strong foundation for communication.
JAPN 2010 – Intermediate Japanese I
This course builds on the foundations of Japanese, covering the first half of Genki II. Students learn more complex N4 grammar structures, expand their vocabulary, and practice reading and writing with an additional 95 kanji. Emphasis is placed on improving conversational skills, understanding casual and formal speech, and being introduced to keigo (polite language) for basic professional and social situations.
Japanese II – Chukyo University
This course builds on foundational Japanese skills using Daiji 2, focusing on practical communication for everyday and professional settings. Students expand their N4 grammar and vocabulary while improving speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Emphasis is placed on formal and polite expressions, comprehension of longer passages, and situational conversations. The course also strengthens kanji recognition and usage, helping students communicate more naturally in both casual and professional contexts.
JAPN 3050 – Japanese Conversation and Composition
This course strengthens intermediate Japanese skills using Quartet (Units 1-3). Students develop more natural and nuanced communication through complex N3 grammar, advanced vocabulary, and structured writing practice. Emphasis is placed on improving reading comprehension, expressing opinions in detail, and using formal and casual speech appropriately. The course also expands kanji knowledge and fosters greater fluency in both spoken and written Japanese.
JAPN 3160 – Japanese for International Business I
This course provides an introduction to the Japanese business world, focusing on formal communication skills necessary for professional settings. Students will learn to write a Japanese resume, participate in mock Japanese interviews, and study workplace etiquette. The course includes an overview of Japanese syntax and expressions used in the workplace, with a focus on keigo (respectful language), including kenjōgo (humble language), sonkeigo (respectful language), and ojigi (bowing), as well as other essential cultural norms that shape interactions in the Japanese business environment.
JAPN 4160 – Japanese for International Business II
This advanced course builds on intermediate business Japanese skills, using Powering Up Your Japanese Through Case Studies to explore real-world business scenarios. Students deepen their understanding of complex vocabulary, expressions, and grammar, with a focus on formal communication, negotiation language, and writing skills. Through discussions, role-plays, and presentations, students enhance their fluency in both written and spoken Japanese for international business contexts.
